MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT CHAPEL HILL

The Creative Spirit

  • The art events here run the gamut – I love the free gallery openings, the annual festivals like Festifall and the Carrboro Music Festival, the fundraisers like the High Heels and Hard Hats Fashion Show that benefits Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. And everything else!
  • Music on the Porch at the Center for the Study of the American South is classic Chapel Hill to me. Bring your blanket and your wine, close your eyes and enjoy. And, of course, there’s Fridays on the Front Porch at The Carolina Inn from April to October.
  • Some of our most quirky annual events are also our most beloved. I never miss the Paperhand Puppet show at the Forest Theatre in the late summer.
  • We’re so fortunate to have Carolina Performing Arts. You can see music and dance performances that represent so many cultures. Truly eye opening.
  • I often volunteer at the American Dance Festival. I’m captivated by these rich, diverse performances.
  • I love to swim at the Homestead Aquatic Center. What does that have to do with art? A public art project transforms the floor of the main lobby area into a mosaic promenade of more than 2,000 light-responsive, dichroic glass elements embedded into a tinted terrazzo floor. It’s gorgeous! Makes you feel like you’re at a fancy resort.
  • Silverspot Cinema takes the movie-going experience to the next level. And they have awesome food!
  • I’ve been known to audit a class or two at UNC – including one on Southern culture.
